Checklist before you arrive in Kassel

So, you've been accepted to the University of Kassel and applied for scholarships, now what?

Visa
You do not need a visa to enter Germany if you are an EU-citizen or from certain other countries. You can find more information about visa requirements on the website of the Federal Foreign Office. If you are not a citizen of the European Union, or any of the other countries without visa restrictions, then you need a student visa to travel to and study in Germany. You should apply for a visa at the German embassy or consulate in your country. Do not get a tourist visa. A tourist visa cannot be converted into a student visa.

Before you can apply for a visa, you normally need your letter of acceptance to the University as well as proof that you have health insurance and enough money to live in Germany.

The German Embassy in your home country can provide you with more details. Contact details on Germany's diplomatic missions around the world can be found at: www.auswaertiges-amt.de.

Housing
Having a place of your own is an important thing. Most international students apply for a room or an apartment in one of the student halls managed by the Studentenwerk. Some of these halls are located on campus, while others are spread out over the city.  Single and double apartments as well as single rooms in residential groups are available. For further information, including descriptions and photos of your housing options, current prices and contact person check out our homepage.

Special offer for International Students: Service-package for international Students.

If you are interested, the Studentenwerk also offers information and advice on how to find private accommodations in Kassel. You can find current offers from private landlords and residential communities at the Online Accomodation Exchange.

You should start searching for a room as soon as possible. The student halls also have only a limited number of available rooms.

Health Insurance
Even if you are medically insured at home, German law requires all people living in the country to have medical insurance from an insurance company in Germany. Without health insurance enrollment at the University is not possible. Therefore, after your arrival in Kassel you should as soon as possible get health insurance.

Germany signed an agreement with a variety of countries regarding the recognition of insurance from these countries. This agreement frees some international students from obtaining health insurance in Germany. Ask your insurance company at home if you come from a country that signed this agreement. If so, you need to bring a certificate from your insurance company at home in order to take advantage of this.

Packing your bags
As you prepare for your trip, keep in mind to bring main things like clothing, medicine, important documents and memories from home like photos and recepies with you. Most items that you will need later can be purchased in Kassel.

Kassel experiences four distinct seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Arriving in Kassel in October, it will already be quite cool, and the weather only gets colder before it gets warmer in Spring!
Please keep this in mind while you are packing your bags. In addition to your normal spring and summer clothes, bring a warm winter coat, sweaters or sweatshirts, gloves, scarves, etc. Due to its location, it rains quite often in Kassel. Therefore, it pays to bring an umbrella or raincoat. Don't worry, if not anything fits into your suitcase! You can purchase all of these items in Kassel, too.
