Getting to Kassel

Germany has numerous airports; the three closest to Kassel are Frankfurt, Hannover or Paderborn. In case you are you are flying into a different airport than those mentioned above or are unsure how you can get from the airport to Kassel, check the Deutsche Bahn homepage: www.dbahn.de or the homepage of your airport.

Remember, from the airport take a train in the direction of Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe.

Also, be sure to exchange some money at the airport. You will need cash to buy any bus or tram tickets.  

Arrival in Frankfurt

Most overseas flights land in Frankfurt am Main. If you fly into the Frankfurt airport, it is best to take the ICE (Intercity Express train) from the airport directly to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. Every 2 hours, an ICE leaves from the airport for Kassel. The ride lasts about 1 hr. and 40 min and costs around 50 Euro. Cheaper trains are available as well but require that you switch trains often.

The train platform is located in the basement level of the airport. Just follow the Deutsche Bahn (DB) signs! Should you get lost in the airport, don't panic. This happens to almost everyone in the Frankfurt airport. If you can't figure out where you are and where you need to go, just ask at the Info-points.

Once you arrive at Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, exit the train station through the main entrance. In front of you, you will see taxis as well as busses and trams. If you have a lot of luggage and want to get to your destination as quickly as possible, you can take a taxi. These can be quite expensive though.
If you are on a budget, it is advisable to take the tram. Take Tram 1 or 2 in the direction "Holländische Straße" and get off at the stop "Holländischer Platz". The tram costs € 2.30 and tickets can either be purchased on the tram or from the machine at the stop.

Arrival in Hannover

From the airport you can travel with the S-bahn to the main train station. Follow the signs in the airport in the direction of the S-bahn terminal. Line S5 travels every 30 minutes between the airport and the train station. The trip lasts about 15-20 minutes and costs € 2-3. Make sure you catch the metro going in the direction of "Hannover Hbf". From the Hannover main train station, it is easiest to travel with the ICE (Intercity Express train) to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. An ICE leaves about every 30 minutes. Arrival in Paderborn

Bus numbers 400, 460, and NE16 travel between the airport and the main train station. The trip takes about 30 minutes.

Once you are at the Paderborn main train station, you can buy your train ticket to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. Fast trains leave every hour, cost about € 22, and will get you here in about an hour. Slower trains (RB and RE trains) take about 1.5 hrs and cost about € 17. With the RB and RE you will have to switch trains in Warburg.

How do I get to the Studentenwerk?

If you are renting a room from the Studentenwerk, you should go there as soon as you get into Kassel. Please try to arrange your arrival in Kassel so that you can stop by our office during the times we are open. Small exceptions can be made if your flight was delayed, but PLEASE CALL AHEAD. From the Studentenwerk, someone will bring you and your luggage to your new apartment.

From the Holländischer Platz stop: Once you're outside the tram and it has driven away, look to your left: you will see a set of stairs or a ramp. Go down these stairs to the underground sidewalk. Go left on the underground sidewalk and follow the arrows and signs for the Studentenwerk. If you use the ramp because of your luggage, remember to go left at the end of the ramp and up Wolfhagerstr. The Studentenwerk Kassel is on the right-hand side of the road and has a large sign.

In case you arrive at Kassel and do not have any accommodation yet, or if you arrive on a weekend or after the Studentenwerk is already closed, you might want to stay at the local Youth Hostel:
